What Is Bleed in Print Design? How to Set Up 3mm Bleed for Brochures Correctly

Bleed is the extra strip of artwork (usually 3 mm) that you extend beyond the final trim size of your printed piece, so that when the guillotine cuts the paper, the colour or image runs right off the edge instead of leaving a thin white line. That is the short answer. The rest of this guide shows you exactly how to set it up for brochures, menus and flyers, with the real numbers to type into your document setup box.

If you have ever received a brochure back from the printer with a faint white sliver along one edge, you have already seen what happens when bleed is missing. It is the single most common reason a print file gets rejected or reprinted, and it takes about twenty seconds to fix at the setup stage.

Every print-ready document has three invisible boundaries. Understanding them is 90% of understanding bleed.

Think of it as a sandwich: bleed outside, trim in the middle, safety margin inside. Bleed protects you from white edges. The safety margin protects you from decapitated text.

Why the printer cannot just cut perfectly on the line

Printing does not happen one brochure at a time. Sheets are printed, then stacked (sometimes several hundred at once) and cut with a guillotine. Two things move by a fraction of a millimetre:

  • The paper position on the press varies slightly from sheet to sheet.
  • The stack shifts under the blade pressure, so the bottom sheets can be cut 0.5 to 1 mm off from the top ones.

A tolerance of roughly 1 mm is completely normal in commercial printing. So if your dark blue background stops exactly at the trim line, some copies will be cut 0.5 mm inside the design (fine) and others 0.5 mm outside it (white edge). The 3 mm bleed absorbs that movement completely.

Version A: no bleed

  1. The photo is placed exactly at 148 x 210 mm.
  2. The PDF is exported at 148 x 210 mm with no bleed.
  3. The printer has to either shrink the artwork (changing your layout) or print it as is.
  4. Result: a 0.3 to 1 mm white line on one or two edges, visible on maybe 30% of the run. The job looks cheap and the client blames the printer.

Version B: 3 mm bleed

  1. The document is created at 148 x 210 mm with 3 mm bleed.
  2. The photo is dragged so it covers the full bleed box, 154 x 216 mm.
  3. The logo and the text stay 5 mm inside the trim line.
  4. Result: the blade can wander 1 mm in any direction and the photo still runs off the edge. Zero white lines, on every single copy.

Add 6 mm in total to each dimension (3 mm per side). Here are the formats we print most often for brochures and menus:

Working in inches? The US standard bleed is 0.125 in (1/8 in) per side, which equals 3.175 mm. A 5 x 7 in card therefore becomes 5.25 x 7.25 in with bleed. Either 3 mm or 0.125 in is accepted by virtually every printer, but never mix the two systems inside one project.

How to set up 3 mm bleed in Adobe InDesign

InDesign handles bleed natively, which is why it remains the safest tool for multi-page brochures.

  1. Go to File > New > Document.
  2. Set Units to millimetres and enter your trim size (for example 148 x 210 mm). Never enter the bleed size as the page size.
  3. Click Bleed and Slug and type 3 mm in Top, Bottom, Inside (Left) and Outside (Right). Click the chain icon to apply it to all four sides at once.
  4. Set your Margins to 5 mm minimum (10 to 15 mm looks better on a brochure). This becomes your safety margin.
  5. Design as usual. Any image or colour block touching an edge must be dragged out to the red bleed line, not the black trim line.
  6. Export with File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print). Choose the preset PDF/X-4:2010 (or PDF/X-1a:2001 if your printer asks for it).
  7. In the Marks and Bleeds tab, tick Crop Marks, set Offset to 3 mm, and tick Use Document Bleed Settings. This last checkbox is the one everybody forgets.
  8. Export as single pages, not spreads, unless your printer explicitly asks for reader spreads.

Quick check: open the exported PDF, and in Acrobat use Print Production > Set Page Boxes or simply look at the page dimensions. An A5 file should report 154 x 216 mm. If it says 148 x 210 mm, your bleed did not export.

How to set up bleed in Canva

Canva does not let you type a custom bleed value, but it does add a 3 mm bleed area automatically, which matches the European standard. Two methods:

Method 1: the built-in bleed (recommended)

  1. Create your design at the trim size (custom size, for example 148 x 210 mm).
  2. Open File > Settings > Show print bleed. A dotted line appears just inside the canvas edge: the space between the dotted line and the canvas edge is the bleed zone.
  3. Also turn on Show margins, and keep every piece of text and your logo inside that margin.
  4. Stretch backgrounds and photos all the way past the dotted line to the outer edge of the canvas.
  5. Download with Share > Download > PDF Print, then tick Crop marks and bleed. Tick CMYK if the option is available on your plan.

Method 2: manual bleed (when the printer demands exactly 3 mm)

  1. Create a custom canvas at the bleed size (154 x 216 mm for A5).
  2. Add a rectangle or use guides to mark the real trim area 3 mm in from each side.
  3. Extend backgrounds to the full canvas, keep text at least 8 mm from the canvas edge (3 mm bleed + 5 mm safety).
  4. Download as PDF Print without crop marks and bleed, and tell your printer the file already includes 3 mm bleed.

Never do both at once. Adding built-in bleed on top of a canvas that already includes manual bleed gives you 6 mm of bleed and a design that is trimmed in the wrong place.

The 3 bleed errors printers reject most often

1. A PDF exported without bleed (or with bleed designed but not exported)

This is number one by a wide margin. The layout has a 3 mm bleed set up in InDesign, but the operator forgot to tick Use Document Bleed Settings, so the PDF arrives at exact trim size. Fix: always confirm the exported PDF dimensions are trim + 6 mm.

2. Backgrounds and images that stop at the trim line

Setting the bleed box is not enough. If the photo itself ends at 148 mm, the bleed area is empty white paper. Zoom in on each corner before exporting and make sure every element that should touch the edge is physically extended into the bleed. Also watch out for images that end 0.2 mm short, which creates a hairline that is almost invisible on screen and very visible in print.

Fix: in InDesign, use View > Screen Mode > Bleed to see exactly what will be printed.

3. Important content too close to the trim, or a white frame around the artwork

Two variations of the same mistake. Text sitting 1 mm from the trim line will be cut on part of the run. And a design with a deliberate thin white border around it (a framed look) is the worst case scenario: any cutting variation makes the border 1 mm on one side and 3 mm on the other, which the human eye spots instantly. Fix: keep 5 mm of safety margin, extend to 8 to 10 mm near a fold or the spine of a saddle-stitched brochure, and avoid intentional thin borders unless you accept the tolerance. If you want a framed look, make the border at least 6 to 8 mm wide.

Pre-flight checklist before you send the file

  • PDF page size = trim size + 6 mm (3 mm bleed all round).
  • All backgrounds, photos and colour blocks reach the outer bleed edge.
  • All text, logos and QR codes are at least 5 mm inside the trim line.
  • Crop marks, if included, have an offset of at least 3 mm so they do not sit inside the bleed.
  • Pages exported as single pages, in the correct reading order, including blank pages.
  • Colours in CMYK, images at 300 dpi at final size.
  • Fonts embedded or converted to outlines.
  • No printer marks, colour bars or registration marks placed inside the artwork by hand.

Do you always need bleed?

No, but almost always. Bleed is not needed only when your design has a generous white (unprinted) border on all four sides and nothing is meant to touch the edge, for example a plain text sheet or a simple letterhead. In every other case (brochure covers, menus, flyers, folders, business cards, stickers, book covers), bleed is mandatory. Most printers, including us, will flag a file without bleed before going to press.

One exception in the other direction: large format work such as posters, roll-ups and banners often requires 5 mm, 10 mm or more, because the finishing tolerance is bigger and some products need material to wrap around a frame. Always check the specification sheet for the specific product.
